Day 5- Perfect! A zoo and a view

Standard

Today I woke up still sick but determined to keep my word and head out. The sky was  beautifully blue and clear and the temps were supposed to be almost 60 degrees. The morning paper said bad weather is coming, so off we went…

First stop, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. It was love at first sight, very well done and carved into the side of a mountain, naturally. We took a chair lift up to the top, and had our snacks on picnic tables next to the snow piles. Not cold though, exactly the right temperature. You could see the whole city from most of the zoo, including the Broadmoor Hotel where I stayed for a conference a few years ago. The most amazing experience included a bunch of giraffes you could feed, that came and were less than a foot from our face. We love giraffes!

Next we drove the rest of the way up, about 6,400 feet to Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. Only a few people, several deer and a funny docent. The place is built like a stone tower with many, many flights of stairs. Funnyt hing, on the chair lift I am not afraid of heights at all. But, on ledges or flights of stairs I about mentally flip out.  Here are some google images…
